The top 10 best selling CD-albums of the SoundScan era did not change last year. "Metallica" is still the second biggest selling album of the SoundScan era.
Nielsen SoundScan is a system that tracks sales data for singles, albums, and music video products in Canada and the United States for Billboard. They began tracking sales data in 1991. Previously, Billboard tracked sales by calling stores across the U.S. and asking about sales; a method that was inherently error-prone and open to outright fraud. Nielsen SoundScan is more accurate
Last year, Shania Twain's 'Come On Over' which is at number one sold an additional 41,000 units bringing total sales to 15,449,000. Metallicas 'Metallica' sold 258,000 units in 2007 to bring total sales to 15,077,000 and closing the gap to Shania by 372,000 units. If these percentages keep up, 'Metallica' will overtake 'Come On Over' during 2009, but my guess is that Metallica will be number one already this year. Metallica will release a new album that will make them sell more of the back catalogue. They will also do a tour that will help as well.
The Top 10 albums of the SoundScan era as of close of business 2007 are:
1 Come On Over/ Shania Twain (15,449,000)
2 Metallica/ Metallica (15,077,000)
